About

Founded in 1914, Johnson & Wales University is a private, nonprofit, accredited institution with more than 8,100 graduate, undergraduate and online students at its campuses in Providence, Rhode Island, and Charlotte, North Carolina. An innovative educational leader, the university offers degree programs in arts and sciences, business, culinary arts, education, nutrition, hospitality, physician assistant studies, engineering and design. Its unique model integrates arts and sciences and industry-focused education with work experience and leadership opportunities, inspiring students to achieve professional success and lifelong personal growth. Johnson & Wales offers Critical Practical Training (CPT) through their internship program, which provides students with practical work experience in their chosen field of study, with academic credit for the experience. Students are eligible to engage in CPT after being enrolled for at least a full academic year as a full time F-1 student, or whenever it is required for their degree program. Why Johnson & Wales University? Just about every college lately is talking about experiential education. That’s because it works. At Johnson & Wales, they’ve been perfecting this approach for more than 100 years. They offer an optimal blend of intellectual development, industry-focused education, résumé-building work experiences, community and leadership opportunities, and an uncommon depth of career services. At Johnson & Wales, experience is the difference. This means that experiential learning is much more than an internship tacked onto a major. It’s woven into all aspects of education, in and out of the classroom. Students won’t just learn theory. They’ll turn it into real world practice. They’ll work on real world projects in class, in industry specific learning labs, and sometimes with real companies. This approach is a more effective way to learn. Through these experiences, students will be uniquely prepared for shifting industries and have the flexibility to pursue other career paths and entrepreneurial ventures. In support of their mission and recognizing the importance of preserving their unique student-centered culture, Johnson & Wales will be guided by the following principles: Undertake continuous improvement and planning for a sustainable future Foster a teaching-focused university that encourages appropriate scholarship and offers relevant programs that maximize student potential Enrich academic programs with experiential and work-integrated learning Be cost-conscious in their endeavor to provide an affordable private university education and be a good steward of their resources Embrace diversity for a richly inclusive community Model ethical behavior and local, national and global citizenship Value faculty and staff by investing in their quality of life and professional development Provide facilities, technology and other resources to meet the needs of students, faculty and staff
