Program Description UHart offers a Bachelor of Arts in English with a Certification in Secondary Education for students interest in teaching English at the secondary level. The curriculum features a combination of English courses and education courses set forth in a structured program that includes practice teaching. The prescribed courses provide not only a theoretical base according to the state requirements but also a practical application of carefully considered educational principles. In addition, students in this program receive a solid grounding in the essentials of the subject matter that they will go on to teach. If you are interested in teaching English at the secondary level, the University of Hartford's Bachelor of Arts (BA) will prepare you for initial certification and the English endorsement for grades 7-12. The program features a full-semester of integrated instruction and experience in an urban or suburban public school setting, under the supervision and guidance of clinical professors and a trained cooperating teacher. Learning Outcomes: CONTENT KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND PROFESSIONAL BEHAVIORS Demonstrate a command of content knowledge, pedagogical skills, and professional behaviors needed to prepare students to meet the rigorous challenges of the 21st century. Demonstrate qualities of a culturally responsive educator. Understand how the brain learns and its impact on teaching and learning. CREATE CLIMATE FOR LEARNING Create a classroom environment that reflects a culture and climate for learning. Reflect daily on their practice and its implication on student learning. STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT Facilitate multiple evidence-based instructional strategies that result in a high level of engagement for all students. Develop meaningful and evidence-based assessments to measure student achievement. Use multiple data sources to inform instruction. Create standards-based lesson and unit plans that reflect the domains of the CCCT and standards. International Pathway Program Students should be advised that this is the Standard 2-Semester Pathway option for this program. The International Pathway Program (IPP) is open to students who need to strengthen their English skills before studying a degree program in the USA. The IPP offers undergraduate students the additional support needed for their first year of university study. Students’ academic, social and personal success are ensured while in the program as they prepare to continue on to their degree. Each semester students will take a combination of Hartford academic courses (credited) and English courses (non-credit). Course options are dependent upon the required pathway. Once students have reached the required English level, they can progress to their program at the University of Hartford.
