Program Description In the Department of English and Modern Languages students will learn critical reading, organizational skills, and research techniques. Plus they’ll learn how to use their imagination in their writing-intensive classes! The University of Hartford's faculty are award-winning teachers and published authors who take an interest in their students' work and get to know them well in small class sizes. The University of Hartford offers two areas of emphasis to choose from: The Creative Writing emphasis helps students learn good research, writing, editing and storytelling skills while producing your own stories, poems, plays, critical and personal essays. In the Literature emphasis, students study literature in historical and cultural contexts and learn how the works of generations of writers explore unifying ideas, ideals, achievements, and aspirations. Students will acquire skills in critical thinking, creative expression, close reading, persuasive writing, and effective speaking. Learning Outcomes Students will manifest an ability to read and understand a wide variety of literary texts. Students will express themselves, whether in their interpretations of literature or in their own creative writing, with clarity, subtlety, and originality. Students will use the vocabulary of literary criticism effectively and confidently. Students will display a broad knowledge of the relationships of literature to historic and/or cultural contexts. International Pathway Program Students should be advised that this is the Standard 2-Semester Pathway option for this program. The International Pathway Program (IPP) is open to students who need to strengthen their English skills before studying a degree program in the USA. The IPP offers undergraduate students the additional support needed for their first year of university study. Students’ academic, social and personal success are ensured while in the program as they prepare to continue on to their degree. Each semester students will take a combination of Hartford academic courses (credited) and English courses (non-credit). Course options are dependent upon the required pathway. Once students have reached the required English level, they can progress to their program at the University of Hartford.
