Catalog description
Join the MSc in Financial Technology (Economics) at the University of Essex. Tailor your studies, gain industry skills, and explore career opportunities. Apply now!
The University of Essex MSc Financial Technology suite has three unique variants for students to explore so they can tailor their Master’s in Financial Technology to suit their interests and goals. In addition to the MSc Financial Technology (Economics) variant, there is also the option of MSc Financial Technology (Finance) and MSc Financial Technology (Computer Science), giving students the chance to specialize in their preferred area of study. At Essex they provide an interdisciplinary programme covering a range of crucial skills required for FinTech, making the most of their research and teaching strengths. Students will learn about microeconomics and big data, software development and the underpinnings of the financial system. They will benefit from the proximity to London as well as Essex's connections with employers. Students will mingle not only with students specializing in the economics of FinTech, but also those specializing in the computer science side as well as business strategy. The MSc Financial Technology (Economics) is designed for students seeking a career in the finance industry, in particular the financial technology sector. This course will equip students with both theoretical and technical skills that are specific for the finance industry. It will also equip them with transferable skills such as the ability to develop and present an argument, and the ability to work independently and in groups. After completing the masters, students may wish to extend their knowledge with a research degree –many Essex graduates decide to stay for further study. Alternatively, the course also prepares students for employment; recent surveys have shown that higher degree graduates are more likely to obtain jobs at professional or managerial level. Recent MSc Economics graduates have gone on to work for a range of high-profile organizations: the Ministry of Finance, HM Treasury, the Work Foundation, Fitch Ratings, and Schroders Investment Management. More generally, graduates find employment in roles such as business and financial analysts, management consultants, government officials, and economists for banks and other financial organizations.
