The University of Essex MA Translation, Interpreting and Subtitling is the first of its kind to offer written translation, oral interpreting and film and video subtitling within a single course. This complete and integrated approach to language services is demanding but it provides students with the expertise to work as a freelance or in-house translator in business, film, TV or tourism. This course is offered with the combination of English and one of French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. Students can be a native or near-native speaker of any of these languages, as they learn to translate to and from both languages. Students work with native speakers in developing their ability to move accurately and quickly between their chosen language and English in a variety of contexts. Explore hands-on, practical modules, including: principles of translations and interpreting, translation portfolios, interpreting practice, technologies of translation, and subtitling. Essex is a leading UK university for language and linguistics research, a place where talented students become part of an academic community in which the majority of research is rated ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’. They're also ranked 13th in the UK for Linguistics in the QS World University Rankings by Subject (2020). This course can lead to students having a career in tourism, business or in international organizations. Students will gain key employability skills such as researching, writing for specific purposes, translation, interpreting and subtitling. Essex's graduates are successful in a wide variety of career paths. They leave Essex with a unique set of skills and experience that are in demand by employers.
