Enroll in the Bachelor of Arts in Communication at the University of Dayton. Explore diverse concentrations & gain real-world experience. Apply now!
Program Description The University of Dayton offers the Bachelor of Arts in Communication with four concentrations: Public Relations In public relations, you'll learn how corporations, organizations, nonprofit groups and individuals manage their public image, control internal and external communication and establish themselves in a community. PR specialists write news releases, conduct press conferences, plan and implement events, write brochures, newsletters and magazines, manage corporate communication and support crisis management. In our program, you'll learn theory and professional skills based on a solid foundation of strong and precise writing strategic planning, message design, ethics and research. Communication Management Trying to manage people in organizations can be a real challenge. Enabling two-way communication to accomplish the organization's goals can be difficult. To complicate matters, many employees in the modern organization are required to work with people that they may never meet - people who are in different zip codes or time zones, or on different continents. That's where communication management comes in. Management requires a keen attention to interpersonal relationships, group decision making, persuasion, cultural differences, clear explanations and especially conflict management. This concentration prepares students to respond to these and other challenges of communication environments in the 21st century. Media Production If you enjoy telling stories, and if the thought of telling stories and sharing other kinds of information across a variety of media platforms sounds exciting to you, then you should consider the media production concentration. This concentration focuses on television and radio broadcasting, audio and video production, and multimedia production. You can gain experience in principles and practical application through production, script writing and carefully designed class activities. Our state-of-the-art high definition video and digital audio production equipment, as well as digital field cameras, editing suites and multimedia labs in our studios, provide you with valuable hands-on experience. You can also build your portfolio by working in our student-run FM radio station and our campus cable TV station, and by covering academic, social and athletic events on campus and in the community. Journalism The field of journalism is more complex and more exciting today than ever before! The news industry is in transition, and the very existence of traditional news outlets is being called into question. Observers suggest that news is heading toward a multiple-platform industry with newspapers, Web news, broadcast television and cable television being rolled together into a new shape. You may be the one who helps determine that shape. Despite the changes, 21st century journalism will continue to require strong writing skills and a solid foundation in the legal, ethical and social issues essential to the professional journalist. You will be exposed to writing, editing, design, research and production experiences with special attention to detail and accuracy, You can gain practical experience by writing for many of UD's campus publications as well as the Flyer News, published twice weekly and operated entirely by students.
