Program Description Hartt’s music history program enables students to explore Western music in its historical and cultural contexts. From broad survey courses to in-depth special seminars, majors, minors, students gain a comprehensive understanding of all periods of Western music. As an important feature of UHart's curriculum is flexible elective courses that are suited to student's interests and needs, their electives are often designed with current students in mind. To that end, courses offered within the last two years have included opera history, string quartet literature, C.P.E. Bach, pre-tonal theory and analysis, medievalism in modern media, cognitive psychology, and critical editing; students may also take courses on jazz and African-American musical traditions in the Jackie McLean Jazz Studies Division. In addition to rigorous coursework, students will participate in a number of Uhart's performance organizations, including their Baroque ensemble, the Collegium Musicum. Hartt’s wide collection of early instruments, including recorders, Renaissance lutes and flutes, harpsichords, clavichord, baroque bows, shawms, and sackbuts, are available for use and provide students with an active and creative learning environment. International Pathway Program Students should be advised that this is the Extended 3-Semester Pathway option for this program. The International Pathway Program (IPP) is open to students who need to strengthen their English skills before studying a degree program in the USA. The IPP offers undergraduate students the additional support needed for their first year of university study. Students’ academic, social and personal success are ensured while in the program as they prepare to continue on to their degree. Each semester students will take a combination of Hartford academic courses (credited) and English courses (non-credit). Course options are dependent upon the required pathway. Once students have reached the required English level, they can progress to their program at the University of Hartford.
