Catalog description
Join the Extended Accelerator Program in Physics at American University! Gain hands-on experience and cultural insights. Apply now for a brighter future!
The Extended Accelerator Program (EAP) may be completed in a few as three semesters and is for students seeking an immersive English-learning experience. The program gives students a firsthand, practical, and cultural understanding of the American University campus and the Washington, DC, area through its contextual curriculum. They may enter the program in the spring or fall and progress into year two of their undergraduate education with up to a full year’s worth of academic credits. Depending on their intended degree, they may choose their elective curriculum in social sciences, humanities, or the sciences. A background in physics prepares students for diverse fields such as astronomy, medicine, engineering, architecture, consulting, acoustics, science education, science policy, as well as physics. Physics courses explore physical phenomena and properties of the universe like mechanics, gravitation, electricity and magnetism, atomic and nuclear structure, waves and optics, and the properties of matter and energy. During coursework, they acquire skills with the theoretical and experimental tools required for the practice of physics and astronomy. At the same time, they come to appreciate how the intersection of science and technology has shaped history and society. The Bachelor of Arts in Physics is designed to give students a strong scientific background, but allow them more flexibility to complete additional academic programs and to pursue other interests. The program is ideal for those preparing for fields in science policy, science education, science communication, patent law, and related interdisciplinary careers.
