The Extended Accelerator Program (EAP) may be completed in a few as three semesters and is for students seeking an immersive English-learning experience. The program gives students a firsthand, practical, and cultural understanding of the American University campus and the Washington, DC, area through its contextual curriculum. They may enter the program in the spring or fall and progress into year two of their undergraduate education with up to a full year’s worth of academic credits. Depending on their intended degree, they may choose their elective curriculum in social sciences, humanities, or the sciences. In an increasingly complex world that grows smaller every day, the study of languages, literatures, and cultures is of vital importance. Learning the ways other nations live and think furthers understanding among peoples and cultures. The Department of World Languages and Cultures (WLC) offers extensive undergraduate study in foreign language and culture (Arabic Studies (Bachelor of Arts), French Studies (Bachelor of Arts), German Studies (Bachelor of Arts), Russian Studies (Bachelor of Arts), and Spanish Studies (Bachelor of Arts), interdisciplinary language and area studies programs (Language and Area Studies: French/Europe (Bachelor of Arts), Language and Area Studies: German/Europe (Bachelor of Arts), Language and Area Studies: Russian/Area Studies (Bachelor of Arts), and Language and Area Studies: Spanish/Latin America (Bachelor of Arts), as well as the jointly-administered program of Foreign Language and Communication Media (Bachelor of Arts) [CAS/WLC] with the School of Communication. In addition, the department has joined with the Kogod School of Business to offer the Business, Language & Culture Studies (Bachelor of Science).
