The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program at Sheridan College is designed for students who wish to improve their English skills for personal, professional, or academic purposes. The program is offered full-time and provides intensive instruction. Students who successfully complete the highest level, Level 5, may receive conditional acceptance into a diploma, degree, or post-graduate certificate program at Sheridan. The EAP program consists of five levels of instruction. Levels 1 through 4 each run for 14 weeks with 25 hours of instruction per week, while Level 5 runs for 14 weeks with 22 hours per week. Students are placed into the appropriate level based on their IELTS Academic, TOEFL (iBT), or Duolingo test scores, in accordance with Sheridan’s admission requirements. The program emphasizes hands-on learning and active classroom participation. Students engage in group projects and assignments that involve interaction with peers and the wider community. They develop skills in speaking, listening, reading, pronunciation, and writing through both classroom and laboratory activities. In addition, students learn how to deliver presentations, conduct research, take notes, and produce academic texts in English. Instruction is delivered by highly qualified educators who are TESL Ontario certified, including professors with doctoral and master’s degrees. These instructors are experienced in applying effective and innovative methods for teaching English as a second language. Classes in the EAP program are typically scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, although they may be held at any time between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Weekly instructional hours range from 22 to 25 hours. Students are also expected to dedicate additional time each week to homework and computer-assisted language learning. Class schedules are selected after fee payment, approximately three weeks before the start of classes.
