Lakehead University's program will show students that outdoor recreation plays an increasingly important role in society, contributing to mental and physical health, family cohesion, culture, environmental appreciation, and economic development. The experiential program provides them with the opportunity to think critically about the world around them and what it means to live in a more environmentally and socially just world. Many of Lakehead University's courses involve interaction with experts in the field and engage students in experiential, service learning projects that make a difference in the communities. It is the university's goal to prepare students for success in this challenging and rapidly changing industry, from planning and leading guided tours to assessing and creating visitor experiences for communities and parks organizations. The program offers a one-of-a-kind concentration in Nature-Based Therapeutic Recreation, as well as double degree options with Geography, History, Gender and Women’s Studies, and Natural Science (Biology). Concurrent Education is also an option, allowing students to complete their Outdoor Recreation degree and immediately enter into the two-year professional Education program. Lakehead University three-year Natural Science program is within the Department of Biology, yet does not require Chemistry and Mathematics prerequisites and contains less theory-based courses when compared to the traditional Biology programs. Following the completion of students' Natural Science studies, they will: Understand the basic principles of life systems and biological diversity Demonstrate a high level of biological literacy Understand the role and relationship of organisms in the environment Exhibit advanced critical thinking and reflective experience skills Lakehead University program emphasizes field biology, and integrates many experiential learning opportunities including lab work and research internships. Each year students will have the flexibility to choose electives from other Faculties to supplement their Biology education, and gain a well-rounded and multidisciplinary understanding of living organisms and the environment.
