Lakehead University's program will show students that outdoor recreation plays an increasingly important role in society, contributing to mental and physical health, family cohesion, culture, environmental appreciation, and economic development. The experiential program provides them with the opportunity to think critically about the world around them and what it means to live in a more environmentally and socially just world. Many of Lakehead University's courses involve interaction with experts in the field and engage students in experiential, service learning projects that make a difference in the communities. It is the university's goal to prepare students for success in this challenging and rapidly changing industry, from planning and leading guided tours to assessing and creating visitor experiences for communities and parks organizations. The program offers a one-of-a-kind concentration in Nature-Based Therapeutic Recreation, as well as double degree options with Geography, History, Gender and Women’s Studies, and Natural Science (Biology). Concurrent Education is also an option, allowing students to complete their Outdoor Recreation degree and immediately enter into the two-year professional Education program. The field of Gender and Women's Studies has transformed dramatically since its introduction to Lakehead University . Alongside women’s experiences and gendered systems, students will examine elements of: Sexuality Queer Theory Law Masculinity Transnational Activism Ecofeminism Social Justice Pop Culture Embodiment Lakehead University Department of Women’s Studies takes an interdisciplinary approach to feminism. The faculty members are prominent in the fields of feminist legal studies, women’s health, queer studies, cultural and new media studies and teach related courses that easily springboard the students into the Masters of Social Justice and related postgraduate programs, law schools across Canada, midwifery, policing, and many others. In Women’s Studies Honours program students are free to combine their studies with a joint major in Gerontology, Psychology, History, English, Indigenous Learning, Sociology, Outdoor Recreation, or Concurrent Education, as well as Concentration or Specialization options with Social Work.
