Program Description The Police Foundations program introduces students to the world of community safety, preparing them for a career in police work. Students in this two-year program will learn: Canadian law Police policy/procedures and legislation Police fitness Investigation and interviewing skills Conflict resolution Forensic crime scene analysis Police services have strict hiring standards. At Sheridan, students will take physical fitness and other seminar courses to prepare them for these requirements. Students will also learn current legislation, and how police promote and maintain safety. To become a security guard in Ontario, students must be licensed. To get a security license, they must pass a course from a Ministry-approved institution and write an exam. Sheridan is an approved institution. This means students can write the exam after they complete this program without taking any extra courses. Sheridan College has built strong relationships with police and community organizations, which approach the college with volunteer opportunities for their students. This gives students the chance to build their resume and get work experience. Students could mentor at-risk youth, provide event security, or participate in an internship at the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). Sheridan College's professors have a wealth of policing experience, including: Patrol Major crime investigations Tactical response Hostage negotiations Senior police management Forensics By-law enforcement Community outreach
