Catalog description
Join the Motive Power Technician Diploma at Niagara College! Gain hands-on experience in automotive technology. Apply now for co-op opportunities!
As a Motive Power Technician specializing in the automotive sector, graduates have the option to operate their own automotive shop or work as an Automotive Service Technician or Parts Manager at an automotive shop or commercial dealership. The program provides hands-on, experiential learning opportunities, enabling students to analyze and solve complex motive system problems while diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electronic, and electrical components and systems. Participants gain experience using the latest technical equipment in state-of-the-art laboratories and develop practical skills in troubleshooting and test equipment during a co-op work term, supporting automotive transportation. In addition, students are exposed to current motive power technology through a unique electric vehicle lab, and upon completion, graduates will have earned AST 310S Level 1/2/3 Apprenticeship in-school credits. Graduates of the Motive Power Technician program are prepared to analyze, diagnose, and solve a wide range of motive power system problems using critical thinking skills, problem-solving strategies, and a solid understanding of motor vehicle operation, components, and their interrelationships. They are able to diagnose and repair climate control, engine, electrical, electronic, personal safety, emission, drive train, suspension, steering, and brake systems in accordance with manufacturers’ recommendations. Students develop proficiency in disassembling and assembling components to required specifications by applying workshop skills and knowledge of basic shop practices, while selecting and using various troubleshooting techniques and test equipment to assess electronic circuits, vehicle systems, and subsystems. Graduates apply knowledge of hydraulics and pneumatics to testing and analyzing motive power systems, communicate information effectively through proper documentation, and utilize information technology and computer skills to support their work. They are trained to prepare, maintain, and communicate data from logs, records, and documentation systems, and to apply business practices, project management, and communication skills to enhance customer service. In addition, graduates assist in quality-control and quality-assurance programs, develop and use personal and professional strategies to improve job performance and work relationships, and complete all assigned work in compliance with occupational health, safety, and environmental laws, established policies and procedures, codes and regulations, and ethical principles. A program with a co-op (co-operative education) component combines in-class learning with hands-on work experience in the program’s field of study. During co-op work terms, students have the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in real workplace settings. This integration of academic learning and practical experience enhances the overall college experience and better prepares graduates for their careers.
