Catalog description
Join the Developmental Services Worker Diploma in Chatham! Gain hands-on skills to support individuals with disabilities. Apply now for funding options!
Developmental Services Worker graduates are trained to support individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities across the lifespan, helping them participate fully in their communities. The program emphasizes skills in community engagement, interpersonal communication, counseling, positive behavioural support, life skills development, mental health intervention, and pharmacology. The program includes features such as mock apartment and lab facilities, as well as work-integrated learning opportunities through partnerships with community agencies. Its curriculum highlights community capacity building and entrepreneurial studies, and it consistently receives strong student satisfaction ratings. Students also benefit from field placement experiences, with opportunities to complete placements within their home communities when possible. Graduates are prepared for entry-level roles in areas such as community agencies, schools as educational assistants, family support services, and recreational programs. Employment prospects are strong, including opportunities for self-employment. Many students secure part-time work in the field before completing the program. In terms of further education, graduates may receive transfer credits toward a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Social Work at the University of Windsor, as well as admission into the Bachelor of Applied Arts in Disability Studies at Toronto Metropolitan University.
