College Certificate - Pre-Health Sciences - Pathway to Advanced Diplomas and Degrees (PHS2S) (St. Thomas): The Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Advanced Diplomas and Degrees program provides students with the opportunity to study subject areas relevant to health career programs at Fanshawe College and to instill an appreciation of the professional roles, responsibilities and academic requirements of health care disciplines. The goal of the program is to prepare students for their chosen health career program. Students will be prepared to enter other programs within the School of Health Sciences or pursue their education at other institutions. The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to: examine biological concepts, processes and systems of the human body, including genetics and epigenetics, as well as the structure, function and properties of the molecules of life, cells, tissues and organ systems in relation to homeostasis, physical development and health. examine concepts, processes and systems of chemistry, including atomic and molecular structure; quantities in chemical reactions; solutions and solubility; acids and bases; as well as organic chemistry and biochemistry in relation to health and the human body. solve numeric problems and interpret data related to health sciences and other science-related fields using mathematical concepts, including algebra and probability, along with descriptive and inferential statistics. use health sciences and other science-related language and terminology appropriately to communicate clearly, concisely, and correctly in written, spoken, and visual forms. prepare a personal strategy and plan for academic, career and professional development in the health sciences or other science-related fields. investigate health sciences and science-related questions, problems and evidence using the scientific method. examine fundamental physics laws and concepts and their application to health sciences and other science-related fields. College Diploma - Practical Nursing (PNG5 or PNG5W) (London or Woodstock): With clinical practice and simulations integrated throughout the curriculum, Fanshawe College Practical Nursing diploma program gives students the skills and knowledge to succeed. Students will begin by studying anatomy, nutrition, pharmacology and the nuances of strong interpersonal skills with patients, families, colleagues and community members. They will learn to work as autonomous and collaborative partners with clients and other health care providers and to do so effectively within the practical nurses’ professional role and scope of practice. The curriculum continues to evolve in response to current nursing and health care evidence and trends. Students will also study theory in the classroom, practice their nursing skills in the simulation labs and get plenty of hands-on clinical practice in acute, community and long-term care settings, under the guidance of a qualified supervisor. The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to: Practice in a self-regulated, professional, and ethical manner while complying with relevant legislation and standards of practice in a variety of settings Provide holistic care, from a health promotion and caring perspective, for individuals, families, and groups across the life span with diverse backgrounds, characteristics, and health and healing needs Assist selected clients to achieve the goals of health promotion and habilitation, prevention of injury and disease, maintenance and restoration of health, and/or palliation, independently and collaboratively Contribute to creating a healthy and safe work environment in a variety of health care settings while functioning safely, effectively and efficiently within a partnership and as a member of the nursing and health care team Use knowledge and research from physical, biological, behavioural, nursing sciences and nursing art to make clinical judgements, in collaboration with the client and where appropriate the health care team, based on different ways of knowing, including critical thinking and intuition
