This degree prepares students to work with secondary-level students ranging from sixth through twelfth grade, as well as elementary through secondary-level students from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Students are required to take courses that focus on various areas of activity, theory, science, and pedagogy. Activity courses cover fitness and wellness, weight training, cardiovascular activities, and the pedagogy behind these activities. A theory course introduces students to the principles and perspectives of human performance. Required science courses include applied anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, and physical growth and motor development. Pedagogy courses teach students methods for instructing individual and dual sports, team sports, dance, the use of technology in physical education, fitness activities, adapted physical education, and curriculum theory and design. In their final semester, students will complete a student teaching internship, placing them in a variety of city, suburban, public, and private schools throughout the Chicago metropolitan area. This internship offers students the opportunity to apply their skills in a real-world setting.
