Pursue a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at Lycoming College. Gain hands-on experience and prepare for a successful career. Apply today!
Pursuing a mathematics degree at Lycoming College thoroughly prepares students for a number of occupations that require logical thinking, analytical skills, and effective decision-making. While mathematics can often be abstract, their students have a variety of opportunities to apply classroom concepts in the real world with hands-on experiences like internships, May Term trips, colloquiums, and “Fun Fridays.” Fused with Lycoming’s traditional liberal arts education and individualized approach to learning, Lycoming’s mathematics department produces competitive leaders, critical thinkers, and flexible innovators who go on to work in education, finance, computer science, systems analysis, cryptology, programming, management, and more. Student Opportunities: Conduct research with a professor and present findings at a regional or national conference. Study the history of mathematics abroad in Greece and Italy during a May Term travel course. Gain teaching experience as a course assistant or as a tutor in the Math Center. Investigate mathematical topics of your choice and present them to the College community through the colloquium capstone. Learn to use leading technologies such as Java, SPSS, LaTeX, and Mathematica. Participate in a local internship within the insurance or software industries through the WISE internship program. Be inducted into Kappa Mu Epsilon (the national mathematics honor society) to promote mathematics in society and stay up to date on its advancements. In the last few years, graduates of the mathematics program have gone on to work for the National Security Agency, Lockheed Martin and Capital Blue Cross, as well as many more impressive organizations and graduate programs. Take an independent study course to explore topics beyond the curriculum. Graduate Outcomes: A degree in mathematics will prepare you for careers in fields such as insurance, petroleum, energy systems, financial services, and much more. While some graduates choose to continue their education, others have gone on to successful careers: Miami University of Ohio Williamsport Area High School United States Department of Defense Binghamton University National Security Agency Lockheed Martin Capital Blue Cross BNY Mellon Muncy Junior/Senior High School Geico New Day USA
