The University of Buckingham’s distinctive tutorial teaching model is central to the delivery of the BSc (Hons) Psychology (2-year degree). For every module on the psychology degree, students participate in weekly tutorial meetings with their module tutor, each group consisting of a maximum of seven students. This approach allows tutors to develop an understanding of each student, encouraging engagement with course content. Tutorials also provide an opportunity for students to ask questions, collaborate with peers, and enhance their teamwork skills. The University’s focus on employability ensures that tutorials are conducted as professional work meetings, with an expectation that students prepare in advance and actively contribute. Students studying psychology at The University of Buckingham benefit from a dedicated team of lecturers who are committed to their learning and well-being through regular, personalised interaction. The University of Buckingham is an in-person teaching institution and does not offer an online or remote version of its degree programmes. Teaching is built around the unique tutorial group model, which fosters close interaction in small groups within the wider student cohort. The psychology programme provides the opportunity to explore each of the seven areas of practitioner psychology recognised in the UK: Clinical, Counselling, Educational, Forensic, Health, Occupational, and Sports and Exercise psychology. These areas are available as optional modules beyond the first year, enabling students to make informed decisions about their future careers as psychologists. Lecturers delivering these modules are practitioners or experts within their respective fields and enrich the learning experience by sharing professional insights. The tutorial format allows students to engage directly with lecturers, discussing both subject content and career aspirations. Further optional modules apply psychological theory to a variety of specialised areas reflecting the School of Psychology’s research strengths, including cyberpsychology, animal behaviour, and creativity and expertise. In the final two terms of the degree, students undertake an independent research project. This component allows them to design and conduct their own research, analyse data, and present findings, thereby demonstrating key academic and project management skills. With the support of a one-to-one academic supervisor, students have the opportunity to pursue research in an area of their own interest. As one of the few British Psychological Society (BPS) accredited two-year BSc Psychology degrees in the UK, the programme offers students the option to accelerate their career progression in psychology or continue to postgraduate study upon graduation.
