Statisticians produce trustworthy data, extract meaning and draw practical conclusions from data, test conjectures, provide mathematical evidence, and critique the reasoning of others. In both cases, these skills have a surprising ability to help make sense of the physical, biological, artistic, psychological, economic, social, and philosophical worlds. As a consequence, quantitative expertise is in high demand on the job market. Moreover, rankings of occupations invariably list multiple careers in mathematics and statistics among the very best. Mathematics is a fundamental, demanding and powerful intellectual pursuit. It is the cornerstone of modern scientific and technological fields. Providing a thorough training in logical-thinking, analytical thinking, problem-solving, and abstract analysis, studying Mathematics prepares students for whatever career path they wish to pursue. Major in Mathematics: A major is an intensive course of study in one discipline, with approximately half of the courses within the discipline with room for an optional minor in any other Arts and Science discipline. Note: Students in this program are also eligible for the Queen’s Undergraduate Internship Program (QUIP) which provides 2nd or 3rd year students with a 12-16 month work experience. The internship normally occurs following the student’s third year of study, after which the student completes the final year of the honours degree. The internships are paid, professionally supervised, career-related positions offering students the opportunity to learn about current advances, practices, and technologies in business and industry.
