Program Description The Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences prepares students for graduate studies, health professional fields, teaching positions, and careers in business and government. The Department offers undergraduate programs in biology (with concentrations in general biology, ecology and field biology, cell and molecular biology and medical technology), marine biology, and environmental science. The Department offers majors in biology education, biology (non-teaching) and a minor in biology (non-teaching). The Biology Major has the second largest enrollment of our Department’s three programs and two majors, surpassed only by General Biology. Students are attracted to the Major by its flexibility, such as the choice of 38 different minors. The Biology Major balances flexibility with academic rigor by encouraging students to take those courses and minors that best prepare them for their future careers. Students select upper-level courses in three areas: 1) Botany and Zoology, 2) Ecology and Field Biology, and 3) Physiology and Molecular Biology. The three areas expose students to several different biological specialities to help them identify their interests and in turn decide on a productive career.
