The Bachelor of Health Science – Medical Laboratory Science program at Ontario Tech University prepares students for a career in the evolving field of medical diagnostics, where modern health care increasingly depends on complex laboratory tests to aid in the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of disease. Students in the program develop a strong foundation in the biological, physical, and health sciences, while also engaging in specialized courses across five key laboratory disciplines: biochemistry, hematology, histotechnology, microbiology, and transfusion science. The program is accredited by EqualTM Canada. Upon successful completion, graduates are eligible to write the Canadian Alliance for Medical Laboratory Professional Regulators (CAMLPR) Fields-of-Practice certification examinations in Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Transfusion Medicine (Science), Clinical Microbiology, and Histology. To practice as a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) in Ontario—and in other regulated Canadian jurisdictions—graduates must, in addition to passing the CAMLPR examinations, meet the standards set by the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO), which include obtaining a criminal record and judicial matters check or vulnerable sector check.
