Catalog description
Explore Hispanic cultures and master Spanish at California State University Monterey Bay. Join us for a transformative educational experience. Apply today!
The Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Language and Hispanic Cultures program provides students with the ability to communicate effectively with Spanish speakers and to appreciate the richness and diversity of Hispanic cultures, offering a significant advantage across a wide range of careers. In professional and community settings alike, Spanish language proficiency and cultural understanding enable individuals to build meaningful connections within an increasingly interdependent global community. Students achieve an advanced level of proficiency in Spanish, following the standards established by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). The program offers a broad understanding of Hispanic cultures through the study of literature, history, art, social sciences, philosophy, and related fields in courses taught in both Spanish and English. Students may choose a specific area of concentration—such as literature, culture, or linguistics—in which they develop deeper knowledge aligned with their interests and career goals. Through service-learning experiences, students engage in real-world projects that connect language skills with community needs. The Senior Capstone project allows them to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of a topic of personal or academic interest. Graduates are well prepared for careers in education, business and technology, travel and tourism, government and nonprofit organizations, as well as for graduate study in Hispanic languages and literatures, Chicano/Latino studies, linguistics, translation and interpretation, TESOL, or internationally focused disciplines such as policy, management, and business.
