The BA in Spanish will prepare students for graduate programs in Spanish or for employment in fields that require bilingual skills, such as tourism, translation, international trade, media and entertainment, education, government agencies, and law. Advanced courses for the Spanish BA include a wide array of literature and culture from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Latin America, as well as upper-level skills courses in writing, translation, and business Spanish. There is a wealth of opportunity to participate in a variety of cultural organizations and activities including the Spanish Club, Spanish Conversation Hour, and the national foreign language honor society, Phi Sigma Iota. Pace strongly encourages students to take advantage of study abroad and other enriching travel experiences. Study abroad programs can last a week, a semester, a summer, or even a full year. They also offer cultural and travel courses that culminate in a ten-day, in-country immersion trip during the spring and winter breaks. The department organizes many events and cultural activities throughout the year, including International Poetry Day; International Career Day; film festivals; Spanish conversation hours; and excursions to plays and museums. Renowned scholars, playwrights, poets, novelists, and stage and screen directors occasionally visit the department and offer guest lectures. Small class sizes enable faculty to provide students with individualized instruction and attention. Among Pace's top priorities is teaching in a supportive atmosphere.
