When students declare a secondary education major at Wilkes University, they make the choice to change the future of every student in their classrooms. The major in secondary education at Wilkes leads to Pennsylvania Department of Education secondary certification. While preparing students to teach grades 7 to 12, the coursework will give them additional skills in assessment and classroom management. Students must couple the secondary education major with one of nine required content area majors that will qualify them to teach a particular subject at the high school level. This double major will combine to give students the qualifications to distinguish themselves in a public or private school classroom. As a secondary education major, students will be required to choose one of nine content area majors: English, History, Mathematics, Spanish, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences, Physics, or Political Science. English, history, mathematics and Spanish readily accommodate the option for students to complete the secondary education major within an eight-semester timeframe. The remaining content area majors may require coursework beyond eight semesters.
