Catalog description
Explore Japanese Language & Culture at CSUMB! Gain language proficiency and cultural insights for diverse careers. Apply now for an enriching experience!
The Bachelor of Arts in Japanese Language and Culture program equips students with the ability to communicate effectively with Japanese speakers and to appreciate the depth and richness of Japanese culture—skills that provide a significant advantage across a wide range of careers. In both professional and community contexts, Japanese language proficiency and cultural understanding enable individuals to build meaningful connections within today’s global society. The program prepares students to engage actively in an increasingly interconnected world by fostering literacy in global issues, multiculturalism, and cultural diversity. Students work toward achieving proficiency at the Intermediate-High level, as defined by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), and develop a well-rounded understanding of Japanese culture through the study of the arts, history, humanities, literature, and social sciences. Graduates are well prepared for careers in education, business, technology, travel and tourism, foreign policy, and governmental or nonprofit organizations. The program also provides a strong academic foundation for graduate study in Japanese studies, linguistics, Asian studies, translation and interpretation, TESOL, or internationally focused disciplines such as policy, management, environmental science, business administration, and law.
