Catalog description
Join the Academic Accelerator for Music Therapy at the University of Dayton. Gain essential skills for your career and thrive in English-speaking classes!
Program Description The Academic Accelerator Program (AAP) is a two-semester program designed specifically for students who are ready to succeed in immersive English-speaking classrooms, but who also want the benefit of English-language and student support to help them thrive. The program curriculum offers a balance of university-wide and AAP-exclusive courses, with English-language course supplements that equip students with the practical, subject-specific vocabulary and skills they need to excel in their coursework. As an Academic Accelerator student at UDayton Global you'll receive: The right amount of support when you need it. A seat in credit-bearing courses, so you can earn a full freshman year’s worth of credits while taking courses tailored to your needs as an international student. This will help you achieve your academic and career goals. English-language instruction designed around your social and academic needs. Integrated and cohorted courses, so you’ll be in some classes with U.S. students and others with your designated UDayton Global cohort. In the music therapy program, you will explore your personal relationship with music and develop professional skills, values, and attitudes necessary to conduct effective and compassionate clinical work with others. The program prepares you to assess client need and design individualized experiences in music composition, listening, improvisation, and performance. You will learn to evaluate and document therapeutic outcomes as a critical aspect of the treatment process. Preclinical training in community and campus-based settings provides you with hands-on leadership experience. Volunteer service-learning, professional conferences, and research opportunities are readily available. Our program prepares you for acceptance to an approved, intensive music therapy internship. Upon successful completion of the internship and subsequent board certification, you will be eligible to practice music therapy in a wide variety of educational, health, and mental health settings. The University of Dayton is a fully accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music, and the music therapy curriculum is approved by the American Music Therapy Association.
