The philosophy program at LSU offers a diverse range of courses covering fundamental philosophical questions, logic, and the history of philosophy. We provide a master’s degree, undergraduate major, and undergraduate minor in philosophy. Philosophy courses prepare students for various opportunities in academia and beyond, with a background in philosophy being beneficial for further studies in law, linguistics, computer science, or the humanities and social sciences. Courses in ethics are particularly valuable for careers in medicine, law, or business, while courses in logic are advantageous for students in mass communications, pre-law, and medical or business fields. All LSU undergraduate philosophy majors undergo rigorous training in ethics, history of philosophy, and logic. Students can select from a variety of courses based on their individual interests to complete their major. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of philosophical study, many philosophy majors also pursue another discipline. Our major offers optional concentrations for students to declare. The concentration in Law, Ethics, and Social Justice is suitable for students interested in the intersection of philosophical questions and normative issues in law and public life, and considering careers in law, politics, activism, public service, charitable work, and more.
