Program Description If you hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, but don’t meet the entry requirements for a master’s, a Pre-Master’s can help you gain a place on a postgraduate degree. For progression to the 1st year of a postgraduate degree at the University of York. Your course length is determined mainly by your English language level (UKVI IELTS score). Students on all course lengths take a set of common or similar modules to gain a solid base of skills for university. If your course is longer than 2 terms, you’ll take additional modules designed to improve one or more of your English language level, academic skills, and basic knowledge of particular subjects. Master of Arts - Applied Human Rights Human rights defenders strive for a world in which human rights are respected, protected and fulfilled. Learn to bridge the gap between theory and practice by combining hands-on experience with interdisciplinary academic enquiry. Discover the theoretical frameworks and practical skills which make advances in human rights possible. Study different aspects of human rights practice: the strategies employed and the debates, institutions and political structures that human rights defenders seek to influence. Students will learn directly from human rights defenders with first-hand experience in governmental, judicial, and grassroots roles. Students will also develop a range of fieldwork, advocacy and legal skills and apply these on a placement in the UK or South Africa.
