Program Description For students who've finished high school but don’t meet the entry requirements for university, a Foundation Certificate can help them gain entry to an undergraduate degree. After completing this pathway option students qualify for progression to the 1st year of an undergraduate degree at the University of York. A student’s course length is determined mainly by their English language level (UKVI IELTS score). Students on all course lengths take a set of common or similar modules to gain a solid base of skills for university. Students taking a course longer than 2 terms, will take additional modules designed to improve one or more of their English language level, academic skills, and basic knowledge of particular subjects. Master of Biology (Honours) - Genetics The University of York's integrated Masters in Genetics examines how the massive innovation in DNA sequencing technologies has revolutionised the knowledge and understanding of living systems, and makes it a particularly exciting time to be studying this subject. This course is ideal if students want an interdisciplinary approach to Genetics. They will have a wide range of options to tailor the course to their developing interests. Genetics encompasses the molecular studies of genes and genetic engineering, through human genetics and disease, to population genetics. The increasing knowledge of the human and other genomes will continue to have a great impact on biotechnology, medicine and conservation. The integrated Masters course introduces a four-year programme that specifically focuses on the skills needed for a career as a research scientist. During this time students work with researchers within one of the UK’s top bioscience departments to learn specialised techniques and gain experience in a cutting-edge research lab. They also undertake specialist research training and take Masters-level modules. Adding a year in industry or a year abroad are both an option with this course too, so students can benefit from the advantages that a year away can bring. The Department of Biology will provide them with the opportunity to learn in new, spacious and modern teaching laboratories which provide excellent facilities for practicals and small group project work, alongside state-of-the-art computing facilities.
