What Nigeria changes in practice
- Processing time — use IRCC’s country tool, not “my cousin got it in three weeks.”
- Biometrics — when IRCC asks, you attend a VAC in Nigeria. Budget appointment lag inside the processing clock.
- Source of funds — officers want a clear source. Naira salary trails, business accounts, and sudden USD conversions need a paper trail. IRCC assesses amount and source (programme delivery update 24 July 2026).
- Cap competition — PAL/TAL-required seats are finite. A January 2026 college intake can close because Ontario’s letters are gone, not because Nigeria is banned.
The order that actually works
- Pick a real programme — Canada programmes. Tuition blanks stay blank.
- DLI list — post-secondary must be on it. All K–12 schools are DLIs.
- PGWP column — if post-study work is why you are going, confirm the programme, not only the campus brand. Public-private (P3) licensing is a common miss.
- School rules — language tests, transcripts, deposits. Those are school rules.
- PAL/TAL — ask the school. Master’s/PhD at public DLIs are PAL/TAL-exempt in IRCC’s 2026 national table (49,000). College diplomas usually are not. Details: cap guide.
- Letter of acceptance (and PAL if required).
- Funds file — first-year tuition + living table + travel, plus a plan for later years. Full table: study permit.
- Apply for the study permit before you travel. $CAN 150. Do not buy a non-refundable ticket on a guess.
- After you finish, PGWP is a separate IRCC product: 180 days, language, passport cap. PGWP.

These amounts exclude tuition and transport. They do not include the school’s health-insurance quote. The Government of Canada does not pay foreign-student medical costs.
Hold funds in a way you can document. A one-day inflow from an undocumented helper is a weaker file than 12 months of parental salary plus a GIC. We will not invent a “Nigeria GIC brand.”
Cap, in one paragraph
IRCC will issue up to 408,000 study permits in 2026 (155,000 new arrivals, 253,000 extensions). PAL/TAL-required issuance is 180,000 nationally; Ontario’s slice is 70,074. Application spaces (309,670) are a different table. Full numbers: cap guide.
Refusal patterns we see from Nigeria (process, not scores)
- Non-DLI “university” on Instagram.
- Programme not PGWP-eligible after a “work in Canada” sales pitch.
- No PAL when the college required one.
- Living funds quoted as “$10,000” from an old blog (the live row is $22,895 for one person).
- Applying after landing as a visitor.
- Unexplained source of funds.
- Assuming a second PGWP after a short diploma you already used.
Real-world scenarios
Two-year public college, Ontario, one person
PAL likely required. Show tuition + $22,895 + travel, and a year-2 plan. Check PGWP + field-of-study if your study permit was filed on/after 1 Nov 2024 (college language bar is CLB 5).
Public-university MSc
Likely PAL/TAL-exempt under the 49,000 row — confirm. Language for PGWP is CLB 7. Master’s ≥ 8 months can support a 3-year PGWP from 15 Feb 2024.
Bringing a spouse
Use the IRCC row for 2 people ($28,502 living, except Quebec) plus two sets of travel. Spouses have their own permit/visa rules. Do not assume an open work permit.

Before you pay a Nigerian “agent”

VAC Lagos / Abuja and the IRCC account
Create an IRCC secure account before you are in a rush. Upload colour scans that are readable. If IRCC asks for biometrics, book the earliest VAC slot you can; “I will do it next month” is how 180-day and processing clocks die on other products, and how study-permit times slip past your school start.
Check processing times for Nigeria the week you submit. If the tool shows longer than the weeks until orientation, tell the school you may need a later intake before you pay a seat deposit that cannot move.
Translations
If a document is not in English or French, IRCC wants a translation. Nigerian court affidavits and local-government birth letters often need this. Do it once, properly.
Work while studying
Study-permit work hours are an IRCC condition on your permit, not a Zinjet default. Read the permit when you get it. Off-campus hours have changed more than once since 2024. We will not print an hours number that might be stale next month — open IRCC “work while studying.”
SDS vs regular (do not mix 2023 flyers)
Canada used to run a Student Direct Stream for some countries, including Nigeria, with tighter funds and language shortcuts. IRCC has changed how SDS works over 2024–2026. Do not file an SDS checklist from a 2023 Telegram group. Open IRCC for the current name of the product, if it still exists for Nigeria the week you apply. This page follows the regular study permit + cap + funds table, which always applies.
If a counsellor still says “Nigeria SDS, $10,000 GIC, IELTS 6.0, two weeks,” treat every number as unverified until IRCC shows it.
Start dates vs processing
If IRCC’s Nigeria processing tool shows 8–12 weeks and your offer is “arrive in three weeks,” you have a calendar problem, not a Zinjet problem. Ask the school for the next intake before you pay. A missed orientation is cheaper than a refusal for late arrival conditions.
After you land
The study permit is not a work permit and not a PGWP. Read the conditions. Extend in Canada if you need more time. PGWP is a new file within 180 days of completion. Keep scans of everything you uploaded; visa-office checklists often ask for a funds history of several months.

Can I fly to Canada first and apply for a study permit later?
IRCC says you should apply for a study permit before you travel. Most foreign nationals need a permit to study at a designated learning institution.
Is every Canadian school a DLI?
All primary and secondary schools in Canada are DLIs. Post-secondary schools must appear on the official IRCC designated learning institutions list. A non-DLI acceptance letter leads to a refused permit.
Does the 2026 cap mean Nigeria cannot get a permit?
No. IRCC set a 2026 issuance target of up to 408,000 study permits, including 155,000 for newly arriving students. Spaces are allocated to provinces. Zinjet does not sell quota.
How much money besides tuition?
IRCC: if you apply on or after 1 September 2025, one person (except Quebec) must show CAN$22,895 living expenses for the first year, excluding tuition and transport, plus first-year tuition and travel. Confirm on Canada.ca.
Will Zinjet file my IRCC application?
No. Schools issue offers. You (or a licensed representative) apply to IRCC. Zinjet is not an immigration lawyer.
Is PGWP automatic if I am Nigerian?
No. Nationality does not grant a PGWP. The programme must be PGWP-eligible, you must meet length, language, and 180-day rules. See the PGWP guide.
Do I need PAL/TAL from Nigeria?
If your cohort is PAL/TAL-required, yes — the school issues it from its provincial allocation. Master’s/PhD at public DLIs are listed as exempt in IRCC’s 2026 table. Ask the school which box you are in.
